- Reflection of Speaker presentation: Students are interested in hearing more about pickling and canning. Most students identified not enjoying beets and were unfamilar with swiss chard. Students wish there to be more space or set-up easier for next presenter. Pictures and visuals made for an exciting presentation.
- Facts identified during presentation: What vegetable is easy to grow and very healthy? Explain the green house benefits. What portion of the beet plant is very healthy? Parsnips are very sweet after a few frosts (True or False.) Why are bees such an essential aspect of our living system?

Did you know that some pieces of produce continue to ripen in their transport, while others ripen in the ground? Buying local allows for products to be delivered as fresh as possible.
- Facts identified during presentation: Biggest challenges for bringing local produce into restaurant purchasing, was understanding how to sell the product at the quantity needed by the restaurant. Chef identified local produce and products was often better produced or prepared. There is an interest to get the dollar in Ohio, by allowing local business to contribute to one another, inorder to save resources such as petro(gas).

- Reflection of Speaker presentation: Students thought Julie was clever in her use-of resources to redesign the Cafe and the coffee cup holder. We were wowed by the amount of waste paper-to-go cups cause. One customer would have used 10,000 cups, if he didn’t use his 3 reusable cups.
- Information learned during presentation:Reusing resources will help with creating a sustainable environment. Making the least amount of impact on the environment, will ensure that resources can be used for lifetimes, instead of spent up quickly, by one generation. Coffee is grown in areas where there will be no frost, areas surrounding Tropics of Capricorn. Julie can not buy coffee locally, but she can buy from Fair Trade organizations that are fair to their workers and production.
Friday, Dec. 20: Speaker Series: Bee Keeper Monica Owen

The ‘Waggle Dance’ is a figure 8 that the bees use to communicate between other bees and signal important resources.

SURVEY
Take our student-created 8 question LEAF Survey!!! What do you know about Lakewood growing, gardening techniques, resources available, human habits?
Results from our LEAF Survey:
- “In a survey asking Lakewood Residents, most had a postive idea about having a garden at Garfield Middle School. Some people say we should because it would avoid people getting sick. I think it would be a good idea, but then again, I don’t because you would have to pick, clean, and cut it. Some people responded no because other people could come and damage it and steal the vegetables.” -De’vryon Gray (8th grader of Garfield Middle School)
